Jock Wulffson
"Wine has been my life-long passion. It started when I was 20 with a wine drink called Ripple - the drink with a ring-a-ding flavor. From there I graduated to a Rosé called Lancers, up in price and up in quality. I moved on to Tavel Rosé, way back down in price and way up in quality. The beginning of my passion².
In the pursuit of great wine and dining experiences, Jock has traveled across the United States, France and Italy, to meet with the world's great wine makers, chefs and restaurateurs.
Jock joined the Phoenix Chapter of the International Wine and Food Society in 1978. He remains an active member having served as either Cellerar or Sir Bacchus (President) for the last 20 years. During that time, he managed the Society's extensive wine collection, which has exceeded 2,000 bottles. With a refined palate, for both wine and food, Jock has worked with the Valley's top chefs in planning more than 200 wine and food pairing dinners for the Society.
Now, Jock brings the Backstreet Wine Salon to the Arcadia District of Phoenix. It combines his passions for great wine, great food and great art. He wants the look and feel of being invited into his living room or a European Salon. The comfortable setting is created to encourage relaxed conversation. It is decorated with antiques and art by local artists.
Backstreet features a full-service retail wine shop with a diverse selection of fine wines to taste and purchase. The wine bar/bistro's menu changes daily and includes many dishes collected from favorite bistros visited during his international travels.
In addition, the Backstreet Wine Guild offers secure, temperature controlled, lockers providing ideal conditions for those wishing to store their wine.
Jock graduated with a Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Arizona. He spent his next five years in the US Air Force as a Captain and Budget Officer during the Vietnam War. After leaving the Air Force, Jock spent 30 years building a very successful career in the Investment and Mortgage Banking industry. Throughout this time, Jock pursued his passion for wine and food that is great tasting, interesting, and fun.
Jock has been married to Liz Matthews for 25 years. He has two sons, Jim and Paull, a grandson, Duncan and a Bernese Mountain Dog named after the great white Burgundy vineyard, Corton Charlemagne, Charlie for short.
